Though Jekyll Island–one in every of Georgia’s beautiful Golden Isles–is primarily known as being the setting for the Jekyll Island Club, once probably the most unique membership on the earth, it also is a major fishing spot for these of us who want to take pleasure in a leisurely and economical day of fishing. In addition to, the Georgia State Document flounder was caught from this very pier.
Pier fishing is nice for all members of the household due to easy accessibility, security, restroom amenities, refreshments and fishing sort out, all shut handy. Don’t let anyone idiot you, there are plenty of fish to be taken across the pier and on the adjoining beaches should you wish to strive pulling a seine.
We caught a number of species of fish throughout the two afternoons we visited the Jekyll Island pier, not to say, loads of blue crab and several other nice stone crab too. We unloaded out gear on the entrance to the pier and only walked 30 or 40 ft to a spot we–my spouse and i–each agreed regarded promising for each of our most stone island tinto capo popular fishing methods.
Not Just a Fishing Pier!
Attending to the Pier
Since we have been staying on the Jekyll Island Campground, we merely needed to drive across the highway to enter the quarter mile entrance road alongside beautiful marshes to reach the pier.
There are great spots to picnic and nature trails to comply with for those who don’t want to fish. There’s all method of wildlife to see together with the natural magnificence of the location.
The very first thing I seen once i approached the parking space was the multitudes of mullet going round the purpose and immediately below the pier close to shore.
I couldn’t wait to solid my net for each large mullet to smoke or small mullet to use for dwell bait. I might tire of throwing the web and catching mullet before my two days were over.
Within the meantime, Beth had hit the jackpot with her crab basket catching both blue and stone crab. She was joined by a number of different ladies and all of them appeared to take pleasure in their impromptu “crab and gab” social gathering.
No kidding, you meet some nice individuals while pier fishing which often leads to seeing them once more on later visits to the Jekyll Island Pier as well as to the campground.
Since we love each camping, fishing, and history this is a perfect spot for us to go to as typically as we get the prospect.
Fishing, Pals, Flounder, and Enjoyable!
I met a few guys on the pier who I rapidly fell into conversation with whereas we fished and shared just a few beers. I had cast my net numerous times already and had a cooler full of huge mullet (Beth neglected to inform me this was our beverage ice DOH!) but none small sufficient to make use of for reside bait.
My new buddy Steve supplied to let me use some mud minnows he had caught in a trap earlier, so I used to be glad. I’m almost embarrassed to buy stay bait since I like to throw a internet, it’s a manthing-o my spouse tells me. I just tell her I prefer to live off of nature’s bounty. “Yeah right” she says. However the word “cheap” was by no means talked about.
The flounder, trout, sheephead and whiting were biting well and an occasional shark was hooked as effectively. One lady even caught a flounder in her open basket crab lure. As a result of the mullet have been teeming in the area, there were a few people pulling a 50 ft. seine on Driftwood Seashore, which is adjoining to the pier, and having great success at their venture.
Pier Fishing Essentials
Danielson Pacific FTC Crab lure: 4 Door Buy Now Required Bait and Sort out
The kind of fishing gear required for pier fishing depends on what sort of fishing you plan to do. I would counsel at all times using a steel leader when pier fishing due to the barnacles on the pilings and because most saltwater fish have very sharp teeth. It is very frustrating to lose a pleasant fish when the chief is cut or abraded and the road separates.
At least 20 lb. line is recommended in addition to plenty of weight because the tides right here can be very sturdy when going in or out. If you’re able to throwing a solid net it is possible to catch not solely live bait of mullet or shrimp, however eating measurement fish Stone Island Jackets too. A 5’ or 6’ ft.–10’ to 12’ diameter when open–solid net is plenty huge.
A floating minnow bucket or battery powered aerator will are available handy for retaining your minnows or shrimp alive until you hook that monster flounder while casting around the pilings. Sheephead and pink drum are sometimes caught using fiddler crabs dropped right by the barnacle coated pier pilings.
Another handy item to have is a landing net for hoisting the fish from the water after successfully getting the fish to the pier. Both flounder and spotted sea trout have smooth mouths and are sometimes misplaced when making an attempt to raise them to the pier utilizing only the fishing line. I should know, I realized this lesson the hard way!
Crabs are easily caught within the shallows utilizing a round open crab trap or a field type basket with escape holes for the smaller crabs. Both blue and stone crabs are caught in these waters with the stone crab having one claw eliminated and returned to the water to grow another until caught again. This identical stone island tinto capo crab could furnish many such delicious claws during its lifetime.
But the Jekyll Island Pier isn’t only for fisherman and crabbers, there have been a few of us simply having fun with the day within the shade as they performed dominoes and downed a number of grownup drinks. Different sightseers meandered alongside the pier or watched excitedly as I pulled in web after net filled with big mullet after a particularly giant college swam below the pier.
The Jekyll Fishing Heart–positioned near the foot of the pier–not only furnishes bait and deal with, however books a number of various kinds of fishing trips in the area. It’s nice to be in a position to buy extra ice as well as, bait and snacks without having to stroll very far, as is the case in many salt water pier situations.
After we had fished a while, Beth went again to the campsite and returned with Ally, our beloved Jack Russell, who proceeded to charm the other anglers as is her forte. Being a very good dog, she didn’t seem very taken with examining the big crabs up shut.
Simply earlier than sundown extra vehicles and trucks began to arrive within the parking area. The sunset watchers were coming to stand their vigil because the sky turned from blue to gold and on to a vivid orange because it glowed through the large Sydney Lanier cable bridge in the gap.
It appeared to be a ritual which we heartily agreed with. What better means to end an ideal day of fishing, crabbing, and speaking with fishing mates as the sun slowly painted the skies as no artist may.
Although nobody can at all times assure fish on any fishing journey, I believe if one picked his time and tides proper he would have a very good likelihood at catching a number of fish of some sort on this pier. And should you don’t catch something
So what, the fantastic thing about the ocean and unsullied wilderness surrounding the Jekyll Island Pier, and the associates chances are you’ll make, is nicely worth the trip. A win-win state of affairs, for my part.

How much did the record flounder weigh

I plan to do a brand new article about what species of fish are caught on the pier, Robert. The state file flounder was caught on the Jekyll island pier and that i’ve helped land 8+ foot sharks there also. Shrimp are so plentiful you possibly can catch them with a throw net. Each Blue crab and Stone crab can be caught simply at the shallow finish of the pier.
When the sea trout begin working you will get weary of pulling them in, but you possibly can always catch a few other times than the principle run. As I said, my favorite spot to fish..

I enjoyed the article. Nice pictures. This does appear to be a wonderful place to spend the day.
I say go forward and begin digging 🙂
We recently had one which traveled over a mile via our farm and barely missed my home by a couple of hundred yards. Even then it stayed a bit off the ground but it still blew down and twisted the tops out of a number of hundred trees on our property. Scary when you are feeling your home creaking and hear the noise. I might should dig a cellar if this keeps up! lol!
Well, keep clear. I remember a number of years ago a twister touched down close to us on hwy ninety nine. Simply missed us. Messed up part of the scenic hwy 99 by tearing up some beautiful reside oaks. Stay protected.
Oh nicely, however my fishing hubs don’t really do too well anyway.
I am more worried in regards to the tornadoes as we have already had a few very shut misses in the previous couple of months. Nonetheless, a hurricane is dangerous news also. Thanks Terrie!
Thanks Randy. I feel I’ll depart it nicely sufficient alone though. It was enjoyable reading yours and hollies and there are such a lot of others on here too that I’ve learn in the present day. Had no idea. Thought I used to be being unique 🙂 . Remembered y’all had some fishing hubs however were not sure that they had been surf fishing ones. Hope you Georgia people make it although this Hurricane season unscathed!

We surfed fished on Edisto Island when our kids have been younger. Thought I would write a few hubs on the topic, but earlier than I began thought I would examine and see should you or habee have already written one (cannot do higher than you two and would not wish to try)! Great hub. Hoping to make my approach down to Brunswick space soon. Take care. I believe I’d write a hub on surf fishing for freshmen…I see habee has executed an incredible one on bait for surf fishing which is a remarkable hub. Boy, am I prepared for summer!!!!!! Happy fishing!
Thanks, Stephanie! Truly, I’m at the Jekyll Island campground right now! I’ll be fishing on the pier later at this time too. Yep, your husband missed a great chance for some nice fishing on this pier.
Thanks again for stopping by and for your nice input.

When i inform my husband about your success fishing from the pier at Jekyll Island, he’ll be sorry that he did not get his fishing gear out once we camped there a few years ago! I loved your fishing tales as effectively because the pictures of this stunning place.
Why heck yeah, WD! I’ve eaten many a hand chopped barbecue pork sandwich on the Georgia Pig! I at all times loved the old string of naked mild bulbs hanging outside. However with pork cooked that good, who cares about ambiance.
And that i did catch a flounder on a mud minnow, in addition to a shark. Thanks for reminding me in regards to the Pig and on your time and feedback.

Hey Randy – This is good. I love the area. You really stirred some recollections. Is it okay to mention the Georgia Pig BBQ on the road in from I95. Back before the freeway was finished, we’d drive out of our option to go to the little cabin. It was the one restaurant I’ve ever been to the place the cook wasn’t wearing a shirt. He only had on his overalls. In fact, they do not do this anymore.
Try a mud minnow below the pier from the water. You would possibly get a fats flounder.
Thanks CM, I would be pleased to go fishing with you anytime. I plan to return shortly when the roe mullet begin working.
Thanks for stopping by and on your time.
@Diogenes-In fact I’m accustomed to St. George Island, Bob! I used to spend quite a bit of time in that space, especially round Mexico Seashore and Port St. Joe. The fishing is excellent almost anyplace alongside that stretch of the gulf.
You are right about the train one will get when tossing a solid net too. I used to be worn out after these 2 days at Jekyll.
Thanks as at all times for testing my hub and in your time and input.

I was fascinated and made envious in equal ammounts. I used to do a bit of angling in my time. And have used the weighted solid net in Florida (St George Island…price a go to and not removed from you). Its excellent train too! “Multitudes of Mullet ” If that’s not the collective noun it must be…Bob

Thanks for the input, Gordon. Like you, I really like all types of fishing and used to personal a ship for fishing on the salt flats within the nearby Gulf of Mexico.
However for ease of use, a pier is best for a group of family or mates. You in all probability know the flounder as a sole and the sheephead appears like it’s named. It has a mouth resembling a sheep’s and the body is striped like a drum.
Yep, it is easy to make associates on a fishing pier as most folks are glad to share their fishing tales.
Thanks in your time and comments and good luck in your upcoming fishing trip!

Beloved the Hub, as fishing is a superb ardour of mine and I love studying about totally different experiences and fish caught all over the world. I must admit that I’ve never even heard of a number of the species you point out but that can also be a studying curve and helps gas the ambition to go to and fish totally different elements of the world.
Fairly a topical Hub this, for me. Though I go boat fishing on the sea and seashore casting often right here in Scotland, it has been a good few years since I’ve fished from a pier. (Largely because so a lot of them aren’t any extra…) Nonetheless, that’s all altering at the tip of November when just a few of us are having a weekend’s pier fishing by day and sampling the delights of the lodge we’re staying in’s bar by night – I’m wanting forward to it. Might even make new buddies like you probably did, as so usually occurs when we are fishing.
