I believe it might have been Hurricane Carol (31 August 1954) that washed away the “Previous” Stone Bridge.

This bridge was weakened in hurricane Carol in 1954 and removed quickly after. The Sakonnet River Bridge to the north was already under building on the time of Carol and changed the “previous” Stone Bridge.

The original “previous stone bridge” was built simply after 1800 and carried the passenger carriage trade from New Bedford to Newport till about 45135 1845. The town labeled “Dartmouth” is actually the whaling city of recent Bedford. Dartmouth is the city instantly to the west, with Westport Ma west of that, abutting Tiverton RI. The drawbridge portion of the bridge was changed a number of times, and repaired several times. It was final rebuilt after the hurricane of 1938, and was repaired after Carol in 1954 to keep the bridge open until the brand new Sakonnet river bridge was accomplished. The central portion was then torn down.
